The Theatre of Making – Craft Fiesta!

An opportunity for families to try out some unusual craft activities under the guidance of innovative craft artists.

1st March 2010 - 31st March 2010

Six talented artists working in a variety of media held open workshops for families in the centre of Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth as part of the Portsmouth Light Night celebrations.

Inspired by the theme of South American carnival, the artists worked with families to make moving rainforest bird toys, colourful masks, decorated drums, animal mosaics and Sun God medallions.  A giant piñata was also made during the course of the day and broken open at the end to release a shower of sweets.

328 people took part, watched by even more, and 51 primary school students also participated in lantern making workshops the week before.

In addition to the craft, there was a programme of Latin American music and dance which drew huge crowds from the weekend shoppers, many of whom couldn’t resist joining in.  The day ended with a samba parade of drummers, dancers and members of the public that wound through the shopping centre.

Comments from people taking part:

“My children love making things and they’re having a great time – it’s really good that they can do this with Dad, so he can spend some proper time with them.”

“I love that parents are made to sit and do this with their children – there’s not enough of that anywhere.  Children having 100% parent time and sharing their joy of parent doing it too – well done!”
