Civil War weekend

The massed Royalists and Parliamentarians of the Sealed Knot will be doing battle on Weston-super-Mare seafront on 8th and 9th August.

8th August 2009 - 9th August 2009

North Somerset Council is pleased to announce the return of this spectacular event which is a unique and exciting opportunity to experience at first hand the trials of a nation at war with itself.

The weekend will feature an authentic 17th century camp and drill displays on the Beach Lawns from 10.30am until 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a grand parade through the town at lunchtime on both days finishing on the beach at Royal Sands for a spectacular battle at 2.30pm.

Featuring the largest castle ever built of sand, thousands of members of the Sealed Knot with horse, cavalry, cannon, pike and musket, it promises to be a spectacle that eclipses that famous siege of 2003.

The major battle site is situated on the beach between Royal Sands and Uphill and the site will be open between 1pm and 5pm on both days.

Entry is by ticket only, adults £5, children under 16 £3, and a family ticket (two adults two children) is £12. Parking is available at Uphill and Royal Sands beach car parks and for visitors to the event all day parking is £3.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or pre-purchased at the Tourist Information Centre on the Beach Lawns or via the ticket hotline on 01934 888 800.

A central focus of the event will be an authentic 17th century encampment on the Beach Lawns. The encampment on the Beach Lawns will be in place from 7th August, preparing for the conflict to come. Here will be found soldiers, tradesmen and women from the 17th century, plying their trades.

A special opportunity has been arranged for children and young people to have a free preview of the camp between 11am and 3pm on Friday 7th August. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.

Funded by the Find Your Talent North Somerset pathfinder, members of the Sealed Knot will wear authentic costumes and will portray life within a baggage camp down to the finest detail of the English Civil War period.

The purpose of the camp is to educate and inform the visiting public on various aspects of this time.

Councillor Felicity Baker, North Somerset’s executive member for tourism, said: "This is yet another event that we have once again attracted to the resort.  We welcome the Sealed Knot back to what promises to be an exciting weekend for both the society, local community and visitors alike."

Local organiser, Richard Pearce of the Sealed Knot said: "We are looking forward to staging the most spectacular Civil War re-enactment of the year here in Weston-super-Mare.”
