The Tower Hamlets Secondary Slam

Some poets write on paper and some poets write on air: Tower Hamlets pupils, we want to hear from you!

1st June 2010 - 31st August 2010

The Poetry Society brings its SLAMbassador champion Joelle Taylor and performance poet extraordinaire Beyonder to Tower Hamlets secondary schools, running workshops aiming to inspire, advise and film emerging poets in seven secondary schools across Tower Hamlets. Pupils will have the chance to learn performance poetry skills and be inspired to write a two minute piece around the theme of Identity – who you are, where you are from and where you are going. The residency will lead up to a large scale Showcase Slam for all participants in Central London – giving Tower Hamlet pupils the chance to reclaim their voice, edit it and amplify it to the nation!

Participants will also have the chance to enter into the Poetry Society’s National SLAMbassadors competition and go onto perform at the National showcase SLAM in Autumn 2010. http://slam.poetrysociety.org.uk. Entries will be judged by respected artists – last year Benjamin Zephaniah and Scroobius Pip – and winners offered mentoring and the opportunity to perform live in London in December!
