School Cultural Fund – The Folkestone School for Girls

The Folkestone School for Girls spent some of their School Cultural Fund on starting up a Textile Club

1st June 2010 - 31st July 2011

Textile Club is open to all years and regularly has an attendance of 20 – 25 students. The project was kicked off with a one day felt making workshop during half term where pupils made felt from scratch. A variety of techniques will be covered throughout the year including batik and weaving.

It has been great to be able to give students the opportunity to focus on skills that they either, wouldn’t get to study or that we wouldn’t be able to give so much focus on in class’ – Miss Jenny Hedley, Art Teacher

'It’s been really good to do something we wouldn't normally do. Without the funding we wouldn’t have been able to run these projects’ – Ms K Turner, Design Technology Teacher

The school plans to continue the textile club part funding it by the girls making and selling items they’ve made at the club.

The success of the Textile club has lead to felt making being a CPD activity for staff. It has also enabled teachers to incorporate textiles into the curriculum next year, with two hour sessions a week for 45, year 11 students. If these sessions are a success textiles will hopefully become an examined subject. It has also made a closer link between the Design Technology and Art departments.
