Art Space Portsmouth Mentoring Programme

Art Space Portsmouth has devised an individualised arts mentoring programme, giving young people the chance to work with professional artists.

1st July 2009 - 31st March 2010

The Art Space Portsmouth mentoring programme started with ARTDATE on 2 September 2009, a creative afternoon at Art Space Studios which included studio tours, artist presentations, viewing an exhibition and artist talks.  Following discussions about their own art interests at a speed dating session, participants were then able to select the artist they wished to be mentored by.

Young people aged 14-16 who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) are using this support to work towards their Arts Awards, whilst students at Harbour School in Portsmouth are integrating it into their GCSE Art course.  Both groups will display their work in an exhibition at Art Space Studios in March 2010.

  • Quotations from young people:

‘Really interesting seeing the studios, I’ve never seen anything like it before.’

‘I really enjoyed visiting the studios and I learnt a lot from what I saw.’

‘One artist let me touch her work and it was really useful talking to Sam and Jan.  I learnt a lot from them.’

‘Speed dating was great, I got to ask my questions.’
