The Romans

The Using Cultural Organisations to Raise Levels of Attainment (UCORLA) project based on the Romans aimed to provide children with access to both cultural and creative opportunities, with the support of a range of cultural partners, that linked to their work on the Romans during Literacy, History, Art, DT, Music, Science and ICT lessons.

The class visit to Chester's Roman museum

As part of the project, Bolton Museum delivered a Roman Workshop which introduced the children to Roman Life and Bolton Library lent the school non-fiction and fiction books based on “The Romans” and delivered a story-telling session to the class at Westhoughton Library. In addition, the class visited the Roman Museum in Chester to find out information about the Romans, Artists in Schools supported the school in creating a Roman Mosaic based on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the BSTC supported the school in creating Roman coins.

Furthermore Activ8 gave the children a tour of the Octagon theatre in Bolton and The Phoenix supported the school in creating a Roman theatre, Activ8 also supported the school in turning a story into a play and Bolton Music Service supported the school in creating sound effects for the play.

  • The teacher stated that the fact that the children had experienced so many different cultural opportunities from different cultural organisations has meant that they had engaged really well with their learning. She found that, because of this, the children’s attitude to writing had improved and they had produced some really well thought out pieces of work. The large number of drama activities had also improved the children’s speaking and listening skills, which impacted on their understanding of the characters’ motivations. This, in turn, impacted further on their writing ability and on the understanding of cross-curricular links.

    The teacher expressed that the UCORLA project had fired her enthusiasm for teaching and this enthusiasm was transferred to the children.
