Embedding Culture and Creativity in Year 5 and 6

The importance of Culture and Creativity in Literacy in Years 5 and 6

10th November 2009 - 4th February 2010

This CPD event for Year 5 and 6 teachers in Bolton aimed to model how culture and creativity could be embedded into curriculum planning with a particular focus on Literacy in order to raise children’s level of attainment.

The UCORLA projects based on the themes of “The Victorians” and “World war II” were used as models and the teachers were provided with the opportunity to explore sections of the workshops delivered by Artists in Schools, Activ8, The Phoenix and Bolton Museum and Archives. The teachers also had the opportunity to view the resources supplied by Bolton Library.

The teachers expressed that the CPD event was useful as it provided them with the opportunity to explore a range of drama ideas such as creating a human weaving machine, setting up a conscience alley and forming freeze frames. The delegates responded well to the creative and practical aspects of teaching literacy and stated that they felt more confident in planning units of work using this approach and delivering the objectives in an innovative manner. The delegates particularly responded well to the fact that the ideas could be used back in the classroom immediately. One delegate described the event as “motivational” whilst another stated that the event was “extremely beneficial”.
