Weston Federation of Schools' Literature Festival

This week-long festival, funded by Find Your Talent North Somerset and organised by the Weston Federation, aims to celebrate literature in all its forms.

16th March 2010

The festival coincided with World Book Day on Thursday, 4 March and students took part in various events including writers’ workshops, reading groups, poetry slams, and storytelling.

Two published authors, Tanya Landman author of The Apache and The Goldsmith’s Daughter, and Meg Harper author of Cyber Pet and the My Mum series visited each school throughout the event.

In addition, well-known children’s storyteller, Jane Flood, also worked in each of Weston’s secondary schools.

Students from each school are also taking part in a SLAM poetry event at Worle School.

The event culminated in a competition to judge the best poem. Bristol-based Poetry Slam who have been organising Slam Poetry in and around the Bristol area since 1994 hosted the hugely popular event.  Some of the contestants from previous competitions in Bristol have gone on to become leading lights of the contemporary poetry scene.

The schools involved are Baytree Special School, Broadoak Maths and Computing College, Priory Community School, Westhaven Community Special School, Worle Community School and Wyvern Community School.
