Streetfest 2010 - Children and young people are re-claiming the streets!

Children and young people from North Somerset will be taking to the streets next Summer when Streetfest takes over the Beach Lawns in Weston-super-Mare in September 2010.

15th December 2009

Organised by Find Your Talent North Somerset and Outdoor Events UK Ltd, plans are underway to create a dynamic and varied programme of events to inspire children and young people to get more involved with cultural activities.

Held on the Beach Lawns and other sites around the town centre between Friday 10th – Sunday 12th September, the 3 day festival will be a celebration of street dance including hip-hop, break dance, street and free-running, music, fashion, graffiti art, street theatre and much more.

The internationally renowned Street dance group and Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Nemesis has already confirmed their attendance and will be performing on stage and running workshops during the weekend.

Throughout 2010, children and young people will have the opportunity to attend workshops and events leading up to the festival weekend. These activities will include street dance workshops, a fashion show, graffiti art, street theatre, art installations, and performance poetry.

Through these workshops festival organisers hope that the youngsters will work towards performing or exhibiting their talents during Streetfest, which will be an exciting opportunity to showcase their talents and reward their considerable efforts.

One of the fascinating innovations of Streetfest will be the creation of an interactive digital media Streetgame. A group of young people will work with the nationally renowned Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol to design and deliver this event, and young people attending the festival will have the opportunity to participate.

The festival programme will be devised by young people working alongside Find Your Talent North Somerset, Outdoor Events UK Ltd, and several Find Your Talent cultural partners including the London College of Fashion, Pervasive Media Studio, Champloo Dance, and Kompany Malakhi.

A series of recruitment road shows will be held in schools and youth settings will be held in the New Year to identify the young entrepreneurs who will play a key role with the programming of this exciting event.

North Somerset is one of ten national Find Your Talent pathfinders, aiming to give children and young people the chance to try out different cultural and creative activities.

It's about helping them to discover new things, to express themselves, to develop a passion and to make the most of their talent, both in and out of school.

The aim of Streetfest is to introduce children and young people to the cultural activities they might not have the opportunity to be involved with before, to encourage their further participation, and to develop existing talent by holding workshops throughout the year at schools, youth centres, and local leisure centres.
