North Somerset Arts Award advisers – from 2 to 60 in 12 months!

North Somerset is one of ten national Find Your Talent pathfinders, aiming to give children and young people the chance to try out different cultural and creative activities. It's about helping them to discover new things, to express themselves, to develop a passion and to make the most of their talent, both in and out of school.

At the core of the pathfinder is the desire to create opportunities for children & young people to design and deliver their own cultural activities, not just participate, and to develop skills and structures that can be sustained at the end of the funding.

To achieve this aim, the North Somerset pathfinder has provided free Arts Award adviser training to over 60 local teachers and youth workers within the last 12 months, and the foundations are now in place to develop a wider network of “Create Culture Groups” in schools and youth settings.

Create Culture Groups are set up and run by children and young people in local schools and youth settings. The projects they commission through Find Your Talent could be anything from organising a music festival to developing a piece of art with a locally or nationally based practitioner.

The Arts Award scheme will give young people with the opportunity to learn the necessary skills, and to work with professional artists and tutors through participation in “Create Culture Groups”.

The Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification encouraging young people’s development as artists and arts leaders. Young people aged 11-25 of all abilities and interests can take part, and can gain their Arts Award in any art form, from dance through to painting and from writing through to event organisation.

The Arts Award can be taken at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and is a tremendous opportunity to develop skills and experience as well as giving young people the chance to work alongside creative professionals and organisations.

Young people can develop their own arts practice, work alongside professional artists, research creative career pathways, and peer lead. At Silver and Gold levels young people work with their peers to develop and deliver an arts project.

Young People have achieved Arts Awards in acting, architecture, circus arts, composing, dance, design, dj-ing, exhibition curating, fashion, film, graffiti art, hip hop, journalism, multi-media, painting, poetry, radio, sculpture, technical theatre and more…!
